Who was Dr James Barry?

Dr James Barry was a surgeon in the British Army and is best remembered for being one of the first European doctors to perform a Caesaren section where both mother and child survive, and for being discovered to have been born a woman after his death. He was born in 1789 in Cork City to Jeremiah and Mary Anne Bulkeley, younger brother of John Bulkeley. His surname may also be spelled 'Bulkley'. He studied medicine in Edinburgh from 1809 to 1812, then studied further in London before joining the army and being posted to The Cape, South Africa where he resided for ten years. In September 1828 he is posted to Mauritius, then to Jamaica in April 1831, St Helena in July 1835, Trinidad in 1840, Malta in 1846, Corfu in 1851 and finally Canada in 1857. He returned to England and was relieved of his duties in May 1859 due to ill health. In July 1865 he died and was then buried in Kensel Green Cemetary where he can still be visited now.
